South African man held in Scotland for locking nurse in car boot

JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 29 (Chinese media) -- A 35-year-old South

African man has been charged with abduction and assault in Scotland for

allegedly locking a nurse in the boot of her car for 10 days, The Star, a South

African newspaper, reported on Monday.

South African-born British citizen Magdeline Makola,

38, was found tied up in the boot of her red Vauxhall Astra wearing only her

pajamas. She had had no food or water and was currently being treated for

hypothermia and dehydration.

Her colleagues at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary

reported her missing after she failed to turn up for work on Dec. 18. Police

found her car on Dec. 26 during a search in Airdrie, east of Glasgow.

"They heard whimpering, so they smashed the window

and forced entry," West Lothian police Constable Alan Scott was quoted as saying

by The Star.

Makola lived in Livingston, West Lothian.

The suspect, described as a stocky, dreadlocked man,

was arrested on Sunday morning. It was believed that Makola met him in Scotland

five or six years ago. He was due to appear in court on Monday.

The motive for the abduction was not known.
