Indian inmates on hunger strike over IPL

BEIJING, April 21 (Xin***)-- Hundreds of undertrials in India's Alipore
Central jail went on a hunger strike, demanding that they be allowed to view the
IPL matches after authorities refused to allow them watch match on cable
television.

Officials said Monday about 500 inmates requested Saturday,
theinaugural day of the Indian Premier League being held in South Africa,
to watch the Twenty20 cricket tournament on cable television.

Prisoners in Indiaare not allowed to watch any private channel. They
canonly watchstate-run television and read magazines and
news***s.

B.D. Sharma, the inspector-general (prisons), said,"I have heard about the
hunger-strike but the issue is absurd and the demand unjustified. The inmates
should remember that they are in a jail and not in a five-star hotel."
