Ugandan police investigates man forcing wife breast-feed dogs

KAMPALA, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The police in eastern Uganda is investigating a case in Pallisa district where a woman was forced by her husband to breast-feed his dogs, a police spokesperson said here on Tuesday.

Judith Nabakooba, Uganda Police Force spokesperson told Xinhua by telephone that Nathan Amoloi forced his wife Jennifer Alupot to breast-feed his five puppies since his cows were taken by her family as bride price.

"Investigations are still going on, the man was arrested but later released on police bond," Nabakooba said.

Police arrested Amoloi on May 4 but released him the following day and label his wife an insane woman.

Matia Kasaija, minister of state for internal affairs said that a team of investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department headquartered in Kampala will be sent to Pallisa to bring the case to a logical conclusion.

"This is a serious matter. I will ensure that this woman gets justice," Kasaija was quoted as saying by the state-owned New Vision daily on Tuesday.

"How can a man force his wife to breast-feed dogs? How can such a thing happen in this modern world where we have Police?" he wondered, promising to hold accountable the police officers in the district if investigations show they mishandled the case.

The couple, now 11 years in marriage, lost its third-born-child, who was sharing his mother's breasts with the puppies, to suspected rabies early last year. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that causes acute inflammation of the brain in humans and other mammals.

"I produced four children but one of them died last year. I now have a three-month-old baby but my husband has been forcing me to share the breast milk with his five puppies," Alupot was quoted assaying by the New Vision.

Alupot's case has caused angry reactions especially from women activists calling for the hanging of Amoloi.

The Association of Female Lawyers in Uganda has offered free legal services to Alupot to ensure she gets justice.

Village told to change name or it won't exist

BEIJING, May 25 -- A village had to change its name, or character, because
the name includes two rarely used Chinese characters that can't be found in a
new police computer system.

The characters for "Tang" and "Lu" have been used for decades but Tanglu
residents who tried to get a marriage certificate had trouble since the
computers didn't recognize their hometown marked on their ID cards.

The system also became a problem for those seeking employment, travelers
and those doing real estate transactions.

Some villagers and experts said changing the village's name is damaging to
their culture and customs but police said it would be too expensive to change
the computer programs.

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhuanet) -- A German man beat up a 24-year-old
womanbecause he felther pricingofasparagus sounded like
an overpriced,according to police Monday.

They said the vegetable vendor was beaten by the motorist because he was
angry at her asking price for asparaguswhich fluctuates wildly during the
short springtime season.

The springtime vegetable is sold for 10 euros per kilo--the highest in the
spring--early in the season.

According to the woman, the man screamed at the woman that her asparagus
was overpriced. He then punched her in the face and threatened to unleash his
attack dog at her. She fled and called police.

18-yr-old kills brother in Guatemala shootout

BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhuanet) -- A teenage boy killed his 13-year-old brother
in Guatemala because he belonged to a rival group, according to police.

Eighteen-year-old Hector Mazariegos of the Mara 18 gang, shot dead his
brother Cesar, a member of the rival Mara Salvatrucha, outside their house.

"The brothers had been arguing for a few days when it built up to a
fire-fight in the street," police spokesman Marco Trejo told Reuters Friday.

Hector Mazariegos, who was also wounded in the shooting incident, was
captured a few blocks from the scene. He was treated for bullet wounds in
hospital.

The Mara Salvatrucha and the Mara 18 are the two largest gangs, with
members often tattooing their faces with gang signs and killing rivals with
gruesome beheadings or execution-style shootings.

Indian man detained for allegedly threatening to kill Obama

NEW DELHI, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Indian police have detained a man in the northern state of Bihar for allegedly calling up the U.S. embassy in New Delhi and threatening to kill U.S. President Barack Obama, reported the Indo-Asian News Service on Sunday.

Ranjan Kumar, in his 30's is now being quizzed and his mental state checked, said the report quoting police sources.

Kumar, a resident of Darbhanga village in Aurangabad district, about 150 km from the Bihar state capital Patna, made a phone call to the U.S. embassy in New Delhi, spoke to an official and said he wanted to kill Obama, said police.

He was taken away by police on Saturday on information provided by the state intelligence, after the U.S. embassy passed the threat message to the Indian government, according to the report.

A team of U.S. embassy "is reaching to quiz him," said the report quoting police sources.

Kumar, the son of a retired railway official, graduated from Gaya College under Magadh University in Bihar. Till a few months ago, he was staying in New Delhi to prepare for various competitive examinations, said the report.

Woman gives birth on plane in New Zealand

WELLINGTON, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Police at Auckland
International Airport were investigating after a woman gave birth while flying
to Auckland from Samoa on Thursday then got off the plane, leaving her baby
behind.

An Auckland Airport spokeswoman said it was not known
if other passengers and crew on the Pacific Blue flight noticed she was in labor
and "the baby was found on the aircraft" after landing.

Police were called when the plane landed shortly
before 7 a.m. and took both mother and child to hospital.

Counties Manukau District Police said they were
investigating whether the child had been abandoned.

12-yr-old arrested for "helping to rob a bar"

BEIJING, March 13 (Xinhuanet) -- In an "unlikely"arrest in the armed robbery case, Omaha police arrested a 12-year-old boy for allegedly holding up the California Bar early Thursday morning.

According topolice,the boy is one of three people suspected of robbery. Investigators said the boy and two men walked into the Bar around 12:45 a.m., and one of the men pulled a gun. Officers said the 12-year-old and an 18-year-old then demanded money from the Keno register.

Police said the 18-year-old punched a female employee, and the three suspects fled the area.

Whilethe 18-year-old and the 12-year-old were arrested near the scene, police continue to search for a third suspect.

Man survives tumbling over Niagara Falls in Canada

OTTAWA, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A man survived on Wednesday after plunging over the world famous Niagara Falls and floating downstream in frigid waters for 45 minutes, Canadian Police said.

Police believe this is only the third time a person has survived an unaided and intentional plunge over the massive cataract, Chief of the Niagara Parks Police Douglas Kane told Canadian Television. Fatalities are much more common, he said.

The drama began at 2:11 p.m. local time (1811 GMT) when a witness saw a man, believed to be in his mid-30s, crawl over a wall and enter the rapids of the Niagara River. He went over the world-famous Horseshoe Falls, about a 56-meter drop, and ended up in the river below.

Rescue teams involving several Niagara emergency agencies attempted to extract the man, but he swam away further into the river and grabbed onto a log.

A private helicopter used the air washing down from its main rotor to push the man closer to shore. A firefighter went into the river and extracted the man, Kane said.

The man was semi-conscious under the effects of hypothermia and a head injury.

Police noted he willingly jumped in, and refused rescue attempts. He is now being treated in a Niagara Falls, Ontario hospital, and police said an investigation was under way.

At least 17 people, not including suicide attempts, are known to have gone over the falls.

Man walks 34 days home after money stolen

BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- A man walked 34 days
home to join his 70-year-old mother for the Lunar New Year celebrations after
his money was stolen in a railway station, the Dahe Daily newspaper reported
Tuesday.

Li Haitao, 30, a migrant worker from central China's
Henan Province, walked more than 800 kilometers from Beijing to Zhengzhou
between Feb. 3 to March 9 to spend the Spring Festival with his mother, said the
newspaper.

It was surely too late as the Spring Festival, the
most important occasion in China for family reunions, fell between Jan.25 and
Feb. 9.

Li found his 2,000 yuan (292 U.S. dollars) in his
pocket had been stolen before he paid for a ticket on Jan. 21 at the railway
station of Baotou in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where he
worked as a welder, said the paper.

His identity card, electrician's certificate and
mobile phone were also stolen. He called the police but the police did not catch
the thief, reported Henan Business News, another major newspaper in the
provincial capital of Zhengzhou.

Henan Business News reported the penniless man was
then sent toa local rescue station. Li was given a ticket to Beijing on Feb. 1.

"I arrived in Beijing on Feb. 2. The police also sent
me to the rescue station," he said. "But they only provide food and
accommodation," it reported him as saying.

After staying in the rescue station for a day, Li
chose to walk home, and picked up and sold empty mineral water bottles on the
way in order to get money to eat. He slept during the day because it was too
cold to sleep at night with only a blanket in the open air, reported Orient
Today, another newspaper in the capital.

He arrived in the provincial capital Zhengzhou at 8
a.m. Monday morning when the police found the unkempt man with a pair of
worn-out shoes, said Orient Today.

The police gave him the money to buy a ticket home.
Coincidentally, he met a bus to Xinmi City and the driver game him a free ride
after hearing his story, the newspaper reported.

Heroin in pregnant woman's waistband

BEIJING, March. 6 (Xinhuanet)-- Seventy three bags of heroin were recovered from a pregnant woman's waistbandafter she was arrested by police because her car had "illegal window tint".

The 31-year-old woman was a passenger in a car stopped by officers Wednesday in Dunleith Del, U.S., because they believed it had illegal window tint. When officers took her to police headquarters, they found 73 bags of heroin stashed in the waistband of her pants.

The driver,27, was charged with drug and weapons offenses.

German woman calls emergency for dating a cop

BEIJING, March. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- A German woman dialed a police emergency line 13 times as she wanted to date a policeman and her arrogance to continue making calls until she found one made the cops confiscate her phone battery.

"I have been without a partner for a long time and now have resolved to look for a policeman with whom to spend the rest of my life," police in the western town of Schwelm quoting the woman said in a statement Tuesday.

She said she would keep calling until she had found what she was looking for. And that she didn't care that she was blocking the emergency line.

When two police knocked at her door, the inebriated woman apologized and promised to bring a cake to the police station the following day. The officers were not especially amused and temporarily confiscated the battery of her mobile phone.

street.

Police questioned him and discovered that his
Identification Card was stolen.

They also learned he was a native of Gansu province
who was on a wanted listed for other crimes.

Feng admitted to police that he was also a burglar in
Gansu and continued stealing in Beijing where he targeted offices and hospitals.

Taiwan police arrest man "possessed by ghosts" for throwing money on expressway

TAIPEI, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan police on Sunday arrested a 43-year-old man for throwing 1,000 New Taiwan dollar (30 U.S. dollar) banknotes from a taxi on an expressway Tuesday and in downtown Taichung City Sunday.

The man, called Chen Ping-teng, admitted during police questioning that he may have thrown over one million New Taiwan dollars worth of banknotes on the road. Chen said the money was made by selling his housing properties and that he was "possessed by five ghosts."

Chen's mother said he was mentally unstable because of drug addictions.

Police found Chen also burned 1,000 New Taiwan dollar bills in a hotel room on Saturday. He still had 920,000 New Taiwan dollars left when he was caught.

Procurators in Taiwan said Sunday that Chen may have committed crimes likely to cause public danger as some drivers on the expressway pulled over or rode at full speed to pick up the money.

The case is under further investigation.

Australian police finds human remains eaten by crocodile

CANBERRA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Australian Northern Territory police warned people on Saturday to be cautious when swimming or camping around Darwin after they found the remains of a man taken by a crocodile while swimming at night in the Daly River about 150km south of Darwin.

"I'd be taking extreme care if I was going to do that. I think there was some complacency involved in this incident," Superintendent Dean Moloney told reporter.

According to Australian Associated Press, Moloney said the three had been drinking and the two men have decided they would try to swim across the river.

Police have destroyed a 4.3 meter crocodile that believed to be responsible for the attack.

This was the fourth fatal crocodile attack in Australia in recent months.

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia.
