Two Argentine inspectors arrested for blackmailing

BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 17 (Chinese media) -- Two Argentine

inspectors have been arrested for blackmailing a Chinese supermarket owner,

local police said on Friday.

The two inspectors from the public health bureau of

Buenos Aires threatened to close a Chinese supermarket for sub-standard

sanitation, unless its owner could "pay them off."

The owner, however, later reported to the local

police and presented as evidence a recording of their conversation and a photo

copy of the bribery money he prepared to pay.

The two suspects were arrested on the spot when they

came to the supermarket on Thursday to collect the "grease money."

The two inspectors, who were accused of blackmailing

and illegal tax collection, could face up to four years in prison if convicted.

About 80,000 ethnic Chinese are now living in

Argentina, and many of them choose to run supermarket for a living. In the

capital city Buenos Aires and the surrounding provinces alone, there are about

3,000 Chinese supermarkets.
