Peruvian TV hostess imprisoned for libelous report

LIMA, Oct. 17 (Chinese media) -- Magaly Medina, a popular TV hostess in Peru, was sentenced by a Lima criminal court to five months in prison on Thursday for defaming a Peruvian football star, local media reported Friday.

Medina, when hosting a celebrity gossip show on privately owned national television station ATV, claimed that football star Paolo Guerrero had skipped the national team's training session on the eve of a match against Brazil in order to date a young model.

To support her claim, Medina showed photos of the football star indulging himself in pleasure, which Guerrero said was not shot at the night before the match.

Guerrero accused the hostess of defamation.

The Lima criminal court Thursday judged Medina guilty and inflicted on her a 80,000-sol fine (2,7000 U.S. dollars).

Medina is now kept in the country's Santa Monica women's prison.
