BEIJING, April. 8 -- A local man admitted killing his pregnant girlfriend when he went on trial Tuesday.
Wang Dong, 32, had been charged with murder and larceny for stealing the victim's property valued at about 56,000 yuan (8,191 U.S. dollars) after killing her.
Wang told the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court that he had doubts over whether the child was his and he was angered by frequent scoldings from his girlfriend, Chen Lina.
"I'm very regretful. I killed her out of impulse," he told the court.
A friend introduced Wang and Chen last May and they were soon living together. But later, to avoid paying a gambling debt, Wang fled to Zhuji in Zhejiang Province without telling her.
Early last November a friend phoned to say that Chen was more than five months' pregnant. Wang returned to Shanghai and continued to live together with Chen.
But the pair were always quarreling, the court heard, and Chen sometimes told Wang that he wasn't the father.
"She always looked down on me and scolded me for my unemployment," Wang said. "My resentment built up and finally burst out."
On November 9, after another argument, an angry Wang tried to strangle Chen in her sleep. She woke up and fought back but Wang proved too strong for her.
He stole a platinum ring and a jade bracelet and escaped in Chen's car, prosecutors said.
"I did this out of impulse. I hadn't thought of killing her before," Wang said. "I took the property in a bid to get some money for escaping."
Wang sold the ring for 600 yuan and again escaped to Zhuji, but he was caught just two days later.
The court heard that DNA tests confirmed that Wang was the father of the unborn child.
Chen's mother, who divorced when Chen was just three years old and brought her up alone, asked for compensation of almost 1 million yuan yesterday.
The court didn't announce a sentence yesterday.
