BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Chinese media) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao urged the nation to
carry on the great spirit shown by overcoming the earthquake, hosting the
Beijing Olympics and launching the Shenzhou VII manned spacecraft. That spirit
will help China gain new achievements in the new year, he said.
"We must unite as one to overcome all difficulties," Hu said at a New Year
tea party hosted by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference
(CPPCC) National Committee, the country's top political advisory body, Thursday
at the Great Hall of the People.
Hu said the past year was an extraordinary year for the development of the
Party's and nation's cause.
"We've actively dealt with severe challenges both at home and abroad and
strived for remarkable achievements for the benefit of the masses and social
stability," he told senior officials, representatives of democratic parties and
various circles.
The country would embrace the 60th anniversary for the founding of new
China in 2009, Hu said.
He stressed that the government would take effective measures to support
Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions during international
financial turmoil and would promote their economic development.
"We will seize opportunities to improve cross-Straits relations and promote
cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan for the benefit of people on both
sides," he said.
In the new year, Hu said, China would actively join with the international
community in efforts to handle the financial crisis and promote the world's
economic development.
Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, who hosted the tea
party, said the work of political advisory bodies should be further promoted.
