Nestle says products in Tanzania have no melamine

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec.1 (Chinese media) -- The Nestle Company has clarified through a statement that its diary products in Tanzania are safe and free from melamine contamination.

The statement came out after the Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority had banned imports of Nestle products of Lactogen I and NIDO I made in South Africa.

"We would wish to assure consumers of Nestle products across Tanzania that all Nestle diary products sold in Tanzania are absolutely safe for consumption," said the statement, "No Nestle product is made from milk adulterated with melamine."

The company further explained that the government of South Africa has advised the Nestle South Africa to do a compliance trade withdrawal of the Lactogen I (batch No.82050179L1 250g package) and NIDO I (batch No.81790181SO2EIM 900g package) manufactured in South Africa. Traces of melamine were found in these two batches.

But Nestle SEA Trading Tanzania confirmed that the company has not imported through any of its accredited distributor products of these two batches into Tanzania.

The Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) last week imposed a temporary ban on imports of Nestle milk powder manufactured in South Africa.

TFDA Acting Director-General Charys Ughullum has explained that contamination of melamine had been found in South Africa-manufactured Lactogen I (batch No.82050179L1) and NIDO I (batch No.81790181SO2EIM).

The two batches were manufactured in the South African country in June and July this year.
